Environment Day
Every year on June 5, we celebrate World Environment Day! It's a big international event that's all about raising awareness of environmental issues and taking action to protect our planet. It was started by the United Nations back in 1972 at the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment. The goal is to get everyone involved in making our world more sustainable and work together to solve big environmental problems.
About the holiday
Brief History of the Holiday
The 20th century became an era of rapid industrial progress, during which leading countries expanded production, often at the expense of the environment. By the early 1970s, it was clear that this path posed a threat to all of humanity. In 1971, over two thousand individuals from 23 countries, including prominent politicians, scientists, and journalists, petitioned the United Nations to reconsider the approach to scientific and technological development.
This petition was discussed at the Stockholm Conference, where a global strategy for environmental protection and minimizing human impact was developed. Efforts began to reduce harmful production practices and implement more environmentally friendly technologies.
Today, in developed countries, controlling emissions, sorting waste, and switching to eco-friendly fuels have become integral parts of daily life. Environmentalists emphasize that only continuous promotion of ecological thinking and educational work can lead to global results. World Environment Day helps instill a sense of environmental responsibility from an early age.
How It's Celebrated
World Environment Day is celebrated with a diverse range of global activities and events. These include informative workshops, community cleanups, tree planting initiatives, and public discussions on environmental challenges. Governments, non-profit organizations, and local communities frequently join forces to organize events that align with the annual theme set by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In addition to these in-person activities, media campaigns and social media play a crucial role in disseminating information and encouraging public engagement. Many businesses and organizations also take this opportunity to adopt environmentally friendly practices and promote sustainability as part of their observance of the day.
