About the holiday

Brief History

The history of World Lindy Hop Day traces back to the early 20th century, when this dynamic dance emerged from the African American communities in Harlem, New York City. Lindy Hop, a distinctive form of swing dancing, is known for its improvisational nature, allowing dancers ample freedom to express themselves through a variety of unique and stylized movements.

During the Harlem Renaissance, Lindy Hop was influenced by jazz music, as well as other dance styles like The Charleston, tap, and breakaway. The dance reflects a fusion of African American musical traditions and European partner dances, capturing the spirit of the swing era.

The name "Lindy Hop" is believed by some to honor Charles Lindbergh’s historic 1927 transatlantic flight, the first solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. While it’s a charming idea, it’s best to assume Lindbergh wasn’t dancing while piloting his plane!

World Lindy Hop Day was created to celebrate the contributions of Frankie Manning, a pivotal figure in the development of Lindy Hop. This special day is observed on May 26th to mark Manning’s birthday, recognizing his significant role in shaping this vibrant dance style.
