Brief History

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency within the United Nations, established December 7 as the day to celebrate the impact of civil aviation on the world. Tourism and business have been transformed due to the advent of flying, not to mention the cultural connections that have been facilitated. The first International Civil Aviation Day was observed in 1994 as part of ICAO's 50th anniversary, and in 1996, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated December 7 as International Civil Aviation Day. They agreed to use this day to emphasize the significance of civil aviation for social and economic development and to acknowledge the unique role of the International Civil Aviation Organization in fostering international cooperation and creating a truly global transit network.

With the United Nations now adopting Agenda 2030, a commitment to reduce pollution and usher in a new era of global sustainable development, the importance of aviation as a driver of global connectivity remains as relevant as ever. In recognition of ICAO's 75th anniversary, the council has chosen the theme "75 Years of Connecting the World" for the 2019 celebrations, which will continue until 2024.
