About the holiday
Brief History
The National Police Remembrance Day was created in 1989 to honour police officers who died while on duty. It serves as a day of reflection for the community, allowing us to appreciate the bravery and selflessness of these heroes. The idea for this day originated from the Australasian and South West Pacific Region Police Commissioners' Conference, which recognized the need for a single day to remember all fallen police officers. The first National Police Remembrance Day took place in 1989, and since then, it has become a significant day for both police forces and the general public. In the early 1990s, efforts were made to build a National Police Memorial in Canberra. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the National Police Remembrance Day, in 2006, the memorial was officially dedicated, symbolizing the dedication and sacrifice of all police officers.
