Farmworker Appreciation Day

Farmworker Appreciation Day

Farmworker Appreciation Day, or FAD, is on August 6th to celebrate the hard work of farmers and farm workers. It's a day to say thanks to all the people who help keep our tables full of fresh food. We should all take a moment to recognize how important they are to our society and economy. FAD is a great opportunity to show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Celebrations include visiting farmworkers and offering thanks in person, raising awareness through social media, and supporting them directly by bringing refreshments or protective clothing. This day honors their hard work and encourages a deeper connection with the food we eat, promoting a sustainable and fair food system.

About the holiday

Brief History

Let's rewind to the 1960s and explore the origins of Farmworker Appreciation Day. Its history is rich and complex, tracing back to the agricultural labor in the United States. In sunny California, Filipino farmworkers protested low pay and poor conditions, sparking the United Farm Workers (UFW) union in 1966. They chose August 6th as a day to honor their hard work, although initially the date was September. In 1994, Bill Clinton made August 6th official, marking it as Farmworker Appreciation Day. This is a yearly reminder to thank those who grow our food, acknowledging their sweat and sacrifice. Next time you eat an apple or a tomato, think of the people who worked to grow them. Farmworker Appreciation Day is to thank people who work on farms now and in the past.

How is it celebrated

Let me share some ideas for celebrating farmworkers on their special day!

Why not visit a farm and bring some snacks or drinks for the workers? You could share their stories on social media and learn more about their struggles and how you can help improve working conditions. Consider making a donation to an organization that supports farm workers, or buy some food from local farmers'markets. You could even volunteer at events that benefit farmworkers. And don't forget to educate yourself and others about the important role of these hardworking people.
