Pneumonia Day
The date for World Pneumonia Day is November 12, and as every year, it is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of collective action in the fight against this disease. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death among children and adults worldwide. It alone claims more lives than AIDS, measles, and malaria combined. The lack of oxygen in the lungs reminds us of the vital role oxygen plays in our bodies and highlights the importance of lung health globally. On this World Pneumonia Day, we come together to understand the significance of oxygen and the steps we can take to combat pneumonia. With respiratory issues being a prevalent concern, this day is even more relevant.
About the holiday
Brief history
The Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia marked the inaugural World Pneumonia Day in 2009 in order to raise awareness about the severity of pneumonia and attract global attention to this under-recognized condition. Since 2009, the slogan "Healthy Lungs for All" has been unchanged. This slogan has been expanded to include ongoing campaigns aimed at preventing the disease and ensuring access to treatment centers.
In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) launched the Integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhea. A public-private partnership has been established to assist governments in implementing this Global Action Plan, under the banner "Every Breath Counts".
In addition to these initiatives, numerous other efforts have been made at various levels to address the impact of pneumonia, which continues to be the leading infectious cause of death among children and adults.
