Sandwich Day
Never undervalue the impact of a well-made sandwich. There is something truly extraordinary about the finest toppings in the world, piled high between two slices of delectable bread. Pastrami on rye? Absolutely! Mayonnaise as a sandwich dressing? You got it! Slices of pickles? Bacon on just about anything? Naturally! French fries or potato chips? Don’t look so suspicious — sandwiches with French fries and potato chips are delightful! The truth is, if something is enjoyable on its own, it is almost certain to be enjoyed even more when it is elevated to a new level with bread and toppings. National Sandwich Day celebrates them all!
About the holiday
Brief history
The sandwich has been around for a long time. The 4th Earl of Sandwich asked his cook to make him a special meal. He wanted something that didn’t need knives or forks. The cook made two pieces of bread with meat in between. The earl could play cards with one hand. The earl wasn’t the first to make sandwiches. He had seen them in Greece and Turkey. After the Revolutionary War, sandwiches were popular in England. They came to America in 1815. In New Orleans, there was a sandwich called the Po’ Boy. It was for workers who were on strike. Two brothers gave away free sandwiches to workers. In Nebraska, there was the Reuben. It was named after a poker player.
