U.S. Air Force Day
The United States Air Force, a vital component of the armed forces, has been defending the nation as an air defense force for over seven decades. This branch of the military is responsible for conducting air warfare, providing air defense, and advancing military space research. In addition to its primary mission, the Air Force also serves as the air coordinator for other branches of the military that operate in the skies. To honor and celebrate the contributions of all those who have served in this capacity, whether in times of war or peace, the United States celebrates Air Force Day.
About the holiday
Brief History
The United States Air Force was officially established on September 18, 1947, as part of the National Security Act, shortly after the end of World War II. However, several decades prior, in 1907, the U.S. Army Signal Corps established an aeronautical division, which served as a precursor to the U.S. Air Force. Not long after this, in 1909, the U.S. military purchased its first aircraft, which was named the Wright Military Flyer and was built by the famous Wright brothers. It is worth noting that a day called Air Force Day was celebrated for a few years in the late 1940s. President Harry S. Truman declared August 1, 1945, as a day to honor and celebrate the men and women of the Army Air Forces. However, as the Air Force was still technically part of the Army until 1947, the day was only observed until 1949, when it was replaced with the current celebration in September. U.S. Air Force Day, also known as Air Force Birthday, is celebrated annually to mark the September 18 anniversary of the establishment of this branch of the military, which flies high above land and sea. Each year, this day continues to honor and show appreciation for the men and women who currently serve or have served in the Air Force in some capacity.
How is it celebrated
