The National Day of Service and Remembrance was originally created by a nonprofit organization called MyGoodDeed.Some people in the United States celebrate this event as Patriot Day, which was proclaimed by President George W. Bush in 2002.Later, the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance became a federal holiday recognized by the United States government as part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. This act, passed in 2009, also includes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.Also in 2009, President Barack Obama officially recognized this day through a presidential proclamation.
How is it celebrated?
On Patriot Day, people across the country come together to remember the victims of the September 11 attacks. Memorial services are held in cities and towns across the United States. Schools and communities organize events to educate children and young people about the importance of homeland security.
