IMD was established by ICOM in 1977, with each year’s event centered around a specific theme that highlights the role of museums. Themes have covered topics such as globalization, cultural diversity, and environmental awareness. Since its start, global participation has increased significantly—from 20,000 museums in over 90 countries in 2009 to 30,000 museums in 129 countries in 2012. Despite technological advancements, museums continue to be highly valued for their cultural and historical significance, with growing visitor numbers reflecting a strong desire to connect with our heritage.

The best way to celebrate IMD is by visiting local museums, whether alone, with friends, or family. Museums may cover diverse fields such as agriculture, fashion, astronomy, archaeology, art, or natural history. If local museums do not align with your interests, consider traveling to nearby cities for a more suitable visit. Carpooling with friends can make the journey more cost-effective and enjoyable. Given the increased popularity of IMD, larger museums may experience high attendance. To avoid long queues and crowded spaces, consider visiting a few days before or after IMD.
