Lawsuit against New York authorities

The Trump Organization, a US company owned by former US President Donald Trump, has filed a lawsuit against the New York City authorities for reneging on a golf course maintenance contract following the January invasion of the Capitol in Washington. This is evidenced by documents filed Monday with the court's electronic database in New York's Manhattan borough.

The lawsuit highlights that a unit of the Trump Organization has been developing the golf course in New York's Bronx neighborhood and has been responsible for its maintenance since 2015. This work required the company to make a significant investment.

The plaintiffs point out that the New York authorities' decision to terminate this contract in January was politically motivated and was not justified from a business perspective. As the document stresses, the terms of the contract prohibit it from being terminated "arbitrarily" without sufficient justification. The Trump Organization is demanding that the decision to terminate the contract be declared illegal and that the authorities of the largest US metropolis be ordered to pay compensation.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is a Democrat, announced in January that he was severing part of his business ties with the Trump Organization. He attributed this to Trump "instigating an uprising" in Washington. Representatives of the company assured at the time that they would challenge the decision.

On 6 January, supporters of then US Republican President Trump gathered in the US capital for a rally of thousands in support of him. Later, they stormed into Congress in an attempt to prevent the results of the presidential election held in the country on 3 November last year, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden.

The Democrats initiated impeachment proceedings against Trump over the incident. There was only one charge in the House-approved resolution: sedition. In the end, the US Senate acquitted Trump.
