Donations to politicians

Federal prosecutors in New York are gathering information regarding donations made by Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and former CEO of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, to US politicians. This was reported by The New York Times.

It is worth noting that GlobalNY.biz recently wrote that Binance exchange stops withdrawal of cryptocurrency because of FTX collapse.

In Oregon, election commissioners in the office of Secretary of State Shemia Fagan are still deciding whether there is enough evidence to ask Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum to file a case against former FTX CTO Ellen F. Rosenblum for donating $500,000 to the Oregon Democratic Party under a false name.

The Fagan administration is also deciding whether there is evidence that the Democratic Party violated the same state law on giving and accepting political donations under a false name.

It's been more than a month since Fagan asked the Division of Elections to investigate, citing a report in The Oregonian that said $500,000 the largest amount the Oregon Democratic Party has ever received in the state's campaign finance database did not come from the Las Vegas-based cryptocurrency company Prime Trust, according to the party.

Also, the publication specifies that Bankman-Fried spent nearly $45 million on political donations before the 2020 US election. Candidates and committees representing the Democrat party received most of the funds.

According to the paper's sources, the authorities do not suspect the politicians of any wrongdoing yet. They expect to get evidence on the FTX founder's case.

Previously, Bankman-Fried was charged in the US with political donation irregularities, e-fraud, money laundering and defrauding investors, among others.

In early November, FTX announced on Twitter that it had filed for bankruptcy. The publication also indicated that Bankman-Fried had resigned.

Bloomberg had earlier reported that the US Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating Bankman-Fried for possible wrongdoing.

Investors last month withdrew 91,000 bitcoins worth about $1.5 billion from FTX, the largest outflow in its history.
