Elon Musk Reveals X: SpaceX Headquarters Makes a Big Move to Texas Tech Hub

Elon Musk’s Texas Takeover

In a move that has taken the tech world by storm, industry giant Elon Musk declared on Tuesday his plans to shift the base of operations for his two ventures, SpaceX and the social media giant X, to the Lone Star State. This relocation is a direct consequence of a recent legislative change in California, endorsed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Musk chose the social media platform, formerly recognized as Twitter, as his medium to break this news. He disclosed that SpaceX would be transitioning from Hawthorne to Starbase, Texas, and X would be migrating from San Francisco to Austin, a city celebrated for its thriving tech scene.

In a recent development, Elon Musk has made a significant decision influenced by a newly enacted law in California. This law, unique in its nature, prohibits school districts from implementing policies that require schools to inform parents if their child expresses a desire to change their gender identification. Musk has pointed to this legislation as the pivotal factor, or the “final straw”, that guided his decision-making process.

Musk’s posts did not go unnoticed. Governor Newsom responded with a terse, “You bent the knee.” State Senator Scott Wiener also chimed in, questioning the authenticity of Musk’s move.

This isn’t Musk’s first relocation. In 2021, he moved the corporate headquarters of Tesla, his electric car company, from Palo Alto to Austin. However, Tesla still maintains a large factory in Fremont, which has expanded since the move.

The announcement about X comes on the heels of Musk’s takeover of the former Twitter platform in a $44 billion deal, which led to the dismissal of its top executives and a significant reduction in its workforce.

In June 2023, Musk rebranded the platform as X, even adding a bright, flashing X logo to the top of the San Francisco building housing its offices. However, the logo was removed shortly after due to complaints from local residents and the city’s determination that no permit had been obtained for the signage.

State Senator Scott Wiener that stood out in a retweet of one of Musk’s posts:

“California literally made you with taxpayer subsidies and because it’s the best place around. Will this be a fake temper tantrum move just like Tesla’s fake ‘move’ to Texas?”
