Screen Actors Guild Award

CODA: Child of Deaf Adults by Sian Heder won the Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG) on Sunday.

The award winners in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories were Will Smith in King Richard, about tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams, and Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021).

Sixteen-year-old Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) lives in the small fishing town of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Her whole family dad Frank (Troy Kotsur), mum Jackie (Marlee Matlin) and brother Leo (Daniel Duran) are deaf, they can only communicate in sign language. However, Ruby not only hears perfectly and speaks beautifully, she also sings very well.

Rossi's whole family is involved in fishing. And because safe fishing regulations require that at least one hearing member of the crew must be on a fishing trawler, Ruby has to work just as hard as everyone else: the family must get up at four in the morning and head out to sea to get back to breakfast, hand over the fish to the fishmonger and then Ruby can go off to school. However, Ruby has a difficult time at school.

Screen Actors Guild of America established in 1933, the union representing the interests of film and television artists and other workers in the industry. It established its own award in 1995. Since then, it has held an annual awards ceremony to honour outstanding achievements in the field of acting.
