Dick Van Dyke’s Wildfire Escape
Amid the devastating wildfires raging through Malibu, legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke has shared an uplifting update. The Franklin Fire, which has scorched more than 2,700 acres as of Tuesday, December 10, forced many residents, including celebrities, to evacuate their homes.
Van Dyke and his wife, Arlene Silver, successfully evacuated their home amidst the chaos, ensuring the safety of their cherished pets — though one managed to slip away. “Arlene and I have safely left with our animals, but sadly, Bobo got loose as we were leaving,” Van Dyke shared in an emotional Facebook update. “We’re holding onto hope that he’ll be alright and that our Serra Retreat neighborhood can withstand these devastating wildfires.”
The couple later posted a touching video of their cat, Bobo, and expressed hope for his safety. Despite the chaos, Van Dyke’s resilient spirit shines through, offering a beacon of hope to his neighbors and fans alike.
Malibu, a coastal enclave known for its celebrity residents, has seen many stars impacted by the fire. Cher evacuated to a hotel with her pets, and Barbra Streisand’s representatives await updates on her location.
This tragedy comes just days before Van Dyke’s 99th birthday on December 13. Earlier this year, the Mary Poppins icon jokingly remarked, “I’m pretty old,” while sharing his modest wish for the milestone: “Just praying that I make it.”
In recent months, Van Dyke has scaled back appearances, citing the challenges of traveling at his age. Nonetheless, the Emmy-winning actor continues to inspire with his boundless optimism and enduring legacy. At the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards in September, his CBS special, Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic, earned the award for Outstanding Variety Special.
Reflecting on his seven-decade career, Van Dyke summed up his legacy with characteristic humility: “For making people laugh for 75 years.”
