Tragedy Behind Glory
The story of Aaron Hernandez, as depicted in American Sports Story, probes whether those around him — both personally and professionally — played a role in his tragic downfall. However, Norbert Leo Butz, who portrays Bill Belichick, argues that the situation is far more complex than assigning blame.
“This whole story broke Bill Belichick’s heart,” Butz shared, highlighting the devastation Hernandez’s demise caused for the coach and the Patriots community. Hernandez’s journey from promising NFL star to convicted murderer is a painful one, filled with legal battles and personal struggles. Despite his success on the field, he faced a downward spiral that led to his 2017 suicide in prison, at just 27 years old.
The series doesn’t shy away from examining the impact of head injuries on Hernandez’s mental state, introducing Belichick’s role as the coach directing him through plays that led to multiple injuries. Butz, however, makes it clear that the issue transcends any single individual. "The problems that affected Aaron were systemic," he explains, emphasizing that Belichick’s primary responsibility was winning games, not acting as a caretaker.
Hernandez’s posthumous diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) raises difficult questions about the toll the sport takes on players. Butz hopes the story will inspire progress, calling for a greater focus on athlete well-being across all sports. He stresses the importance of putting the person before the sport, stating that athletes should be valued and protected, both mentally and physically.
