Comic-Con Chronicles

As pop culture enthusiasts from across the globe made a keen return to the first San Diego Comic-Con since the twin strikes of writers and actors last year, video game actors seized the opportunity to voice their concerns about artificial intelligence.

Ray Rodriguez, the Chief Contracts Officer of SAG-AFTRA, expressed his frustration at the convention, stating, “After a year and a half of negotiations, we’re still receiving proposals that fail to safeguard all our members and their performances from the unethical exploitation of artificial intelligence.”

He added, “There comes a time when you have to stop repeating what hasn’t been successful. We’ve reached that juncture where it was necessary to take this step.”

On Friday, video game voice actors and motion-capture performers initiated a strike due to unsuccessful contract negotiations centered around AI-related protections for workers. This resulted in another work stoppage in Hollywood.

The SAG-AFTRA strike of the Interactive Media Agreement came after months of discussions with major video game companies, including Activision Productions, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Take-Two Interactive, Disney, Character Voices, and Warner Bros Discovery’s WB Games.

Meanwhile, fans at the convention rejoiced over the revival of Comic-Con, which was once again filled with A-list celebrities and writers.

SAG-AFTRA and the National Association of Voice Actors held panels at the convention to highlight the pressing issues they face with AI.

Despite the ongoing dispute, major video game companies continued with their convention panels. EA Games, for instance, announced the voice cast for the upcoming installment of the popular “Dragon Age” video game franchise, “Dragon Age: The Voices of the Vanguard.”

The panel, which took place a day before the strike started, featured voice actors Ali Hillis and Ike Amadi, both known for “Mass Effect 3,” Nick Boraine, known for “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,” among others.

As the famous author George R.R. Martin once said, “Artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” This quote resonates with the current situation, highlighting the potential risks and ethical considerations of AI in the entertainment industry.
