Tesla Shuffles Top Brass
Tesla Inc. is strategically relocating executive Tom Zhu back to China, aiming to strengthen its position in the world’s largest auto market, reports the Wall Street Journal. Zhu, who has been pivotal in Tesla's Asia Pacific operations, will again lead efforts in a region critical for the company's global ambitions.
Having joined Tesla as a senior vice president of automotive in April 2023, Zhu has been instrumental in managing global production, sales, deliveries, service, and overseeing the company's factories. His return to China follows CEO Elon Musk's April visit, which secured preliminary approvals for deploying Tesla’s driver-assistance systems locally.
This move is part of a broader strategy to address recent challenges, including a slowdown in electric vehicle sales that led to a global reduction of Tesla’s workforce by over 10% and the departure of key executives.
Since late 2022, Zhu has been based in Austin, Texas, managing Tesla's newest manufacturing plant and overseeing a team that once included 25 direct reports. However, his focus has shifted predominantly towards Asia, where almost all of his current 10 direct reports are based.
Tesla’s repositioning of Zhu underscores its commitment to regaining momentum in China amid broader organizational changes and market dynamics.
