Historic Win
French filmmaker Justine Triet's "Anatomy Of A Fall" wins Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or. The captivating courtroom drama, featuring Sandra Huller, marks only the third time a woman director claims the top honor.
Competition and Victory
Despite facing fierce competition from renowned directors such as Wes Anderson, Todd Haynes, and Karim Ainouz, "Anatomy Of A Fall" emerged triumphant during the festival's closing ceremony on Saturday. The Palme d'Or, the highest prize at the festival, was first introduced by the organizing committee in 1955.
Recognition and Previous Winners
Jane Fonda, a distinguished veteran actress, had the honor of presenting the award to Triet. Triet, who previously directed "Age Of Panic" in 2013 and "Sibyl" in 2019, now joins the esteemed company of previous female Palme d'Or winners, Jane Campion and Julia Ducournau, who won for "The Piano" in 1993 and "Titane" in 2021, respectively.
Other Noteworthy Awards
At the ceremony, besides the Palme d'Or, other notable awards were given out. Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone Of Interest," based on Martin Amis's novel, received the Cannes Grand Prix. Aki Kaurismaki's "Fallen Leaves," a deadpan love story in a loveless workaday world, was honored with the jury prize.
Koji Yakusho won the best actor award for his role in Wim Wenders' "Perfect Days," and Merve Dizdar was named best actress for Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "About Dry Grasses." Tran Anh Hung received recognition as the best director for "Pot-au-Feu," a 19th-century French gourmet chateau love story starring Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel. The screenplay and Queer Palm awards were given to Yuji Sakamoto's "Monster," a powerful LGBT-themed film.
Highlights Beyond the Competition
Although not in the running for the Palme d'Or, the festival showcased highly anticipated premieres, including Martin Scorsese's epic "Killers Of The Flower Moon," featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro.
Additionally, the legendary Harrison Ford was honored with an honorary Palme d'Or ahead of the world debut screening of his latest film, "Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny." Johnny Depp also returned to the spotlight with the premiere of his historical drama, "Jeanne Du Barry," marking his major onscreen appearance since his well-publicized defamation case with ex-wife Amber Heard last year.
