There will be no sequel
Streaming service Netflix has not renewed Cowboy Bebop, 2021, the remake of the late 90s anime of the same name, for a second season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to close the adaptation came three weeks after its premiere.
The ten-episode project has received only 46% positive reviews from critics at review portal Rotten Tomatoes and 56% support from viewers, the publication notes. While Cowboy Bebop has amassed 74 million hours of worldwide viewing in the first days of its release. What's more, in the week from November 29 to December 5, that figure dropped 59%.
It's worth noting that The Hollywood Reporter's sources note that Netflix decides whether or not to renew the project based on the balance between viewing numbers and production costs. The service renews a series if its rating is no lower than 60%.
"Cowboy Bebop" is about space bounty hunters travelling through the solar system in the distant future. The Netflix series stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Alex Hassell, Daniella Pineda, Elena Satine and others in the lead roles. The series was released on 19 November.
