Nicholas Austin Pizzolatto is an American author, screenwriter, director, and producer. He is best known for creating the HBO crime drama series True Detective (2014–present).
Pizzolatto transitioned to television shortly after, writing for The Killing before developing True Detective, which became a cultural phenomenon upon its 2014 debut. The show’s first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was praised for its philosophical depth, atmospheric tone, and nonlinear storytelling.
Following the success of season one, Pizzolatto continued as showrunner and sole writer of subsequent True Detective seasons, expanding the series’ thematic and stylistic range. He also took on directing duties in later episodes, cementing his reputation as an auteur in modern television.
Beyond True Detective, Pizzolatto has explored projects in both film and streaming, including collaborations with major studios and upcoming original works. His writing is noted for its Southern Gothic influences, existential dialogue, and complex moral characters.
