Biography
George Timothy Clooney is an American actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, entrepreneur, and political activist. His journey from a struggling shoe salesman to one of Hollywood's most influential and beloved figures is a testament to remarkable perseverance, charm, and a rare ability to remain "one of the guys" even at the pinnacle of global success. The nephew of the great singer Rosemary Clooney and cousin of actor Miguel Ferrer, he spent years grinding through television guest spots until the role of Dr. Doug Ross on ER made him a superstar. Refusing to be typecast as just a pretty face, he built a career as the author of intelligent dramas and socially conscious films, winning two Academy Awards — one as an actor and one as a producer. Today, he is more than an actor; he is a brand, an entrepreneur, and an activist who uses his fame to champion human rights and free speech. His marriage to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin and the birth of their twins finally shattered the myth of the "eternal bachelor."
Early Life and Education
George Timothy Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nina Bruce (née Warren), a former beauty queen and city councilwoman, and Nick Clooney, a television host and journalist. He grew up in a large Irish Catholic family where his aunt was the famous singer and actress Rosemary Clooney and his cousin was actor Miguel Ferrer.
Clooney's childhood was steeped in television: his father often took him to the set. Due to his father's work, the family frequently moved throughout Kentucky and Ohio. During his school years, Clooney suffered from Bell's palsy, which left half of his face paralyzed for about a year, but he eventually made a full recovery.
After graduating from Augusta High School, Clooney enrolled at Northern Kentucky University as a journalism major. However, not wanting to be constantly compared to his father, he dropped out in 1981. He worked as a shoe salesman and as a tobacco harvester on a farm. A fateful phone call from his cousin Miguel Ferrer, who offered him a small role in a horse-racing film, proved to be the turning point that prompted his move to Los Angeles and the start of his acting career.
Early Career and Television Breakthrough
Clooney's early years in Hollywood were tough. He played guest roles in popular sitcoms such as The Facts of Life (1985–1987), Roseanne, and series like Bodies of Evidence and Sisters.
The real breakthrough came in 1994 when he was cast as Dr. Doug Ross on the award-winning medical drama ER. This role brought him worldwide fame, two Primetime Emmy nominations, and the status of one of television's highest-paid actors. He starred opposite Anthony Edwards, Noah Wyle, and Julianna Margulies. His compelling performance earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations, three Golden Globes, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards.
«You have only a short period of time in your life to make your mark, and I’m there now.» — George Clooney.
Film Career and Directing
After leaving ER, Clooney focused on his film career. He starred in successful action films and comedies, including From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Three Kings (1999), and Ocean's Eleven (2001), which launched a successful franchise.
Parallel to his acting, Clooney actively developed his career as a director and producer. His directorial debut came in 2002 with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. In 2005, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a disillusioned CIA agent in the political thriller Syriana. In 2012, he won his second Oscar as a producer of Argo, which won Best Picture. In addition, Clooney was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Michael Clayton (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and The Descendants (2011).
In 2026, Clooney was honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
Activism and Public Engagement
Clooney is known as a consistent supporter of the Democratic Party. He supported the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama (2008 and 2012) and Hillary Clinton (2016). In 2024, he published a resonant op-ed in The New York Times calling for Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race, and later endorsed Kamala Harris.
Clooney is a long-time and outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In 2026, he accused Trump of war crimes over his threats to Iran and called for unity after a shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
Together with his wife, Amal Clooney, he founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which wages justice by providing free legal aid in defense of free speech and women's rights in more than 40 countries. In 2010, he co-founded the Satellite Sentinel Project, which used satellite imagery to monitor conflicts in Sudan.
«I’m kind of comfortable with getting older because it’s better than the other option, which is being dead.» — George Clooney.
Personal Life
Clooney has been married twice. From 1989 to 1993, he was married to actress Talia Balsam. After the divorce, he long maintained that he would never marry again.
Everything changed when, in July 2013, he met British-Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin at a charity dinner at his Lake Como home. They became engaged in April 2014 and were married later that year. In June 2017, the couple welcomed twins — a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Ella. In 2025, Clooney, his wife, and his children were awarded French citizenship.
Famous Friends and Acquaintances
Clooney's circle of friends is Hollywood's elite and beyond. His closest friend is Randy Gerber, a former model and co-founder of the Casamigos tequila brand. Together they built a multi-million dollar business, which was later sold.
Another close friend and long-time producing partner is Grant Heslov. In 2013, Clooney made a gesture that went down in Hollywood history: he gave $1 million in cash each to 14 of his closest friends, a group he calls "The Boys". The only confirmed recipient is Randy Gerber; the others are rumored to include actor Richard Kind, producer Mike Meldman, and Tommy Hinkley.
Clooney was a close friend of Paul Newman and Gregory Peck. He also maintains friendships with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as with David and Victoria Beckham.
«There is a strange pecking order among actors. Theatre actors look down on film actors, who look down on TV actors. Thank God for reality shows, or we wouldn’t have anybody to look down on.» — George Clooney.
