Celine Song is a Canadian director, playwright, and screenwriter based in New York City. Among her plays are Endlings and The Seagull on The Sims 4 (both 2020). Her directorial film debut Past Lives (2023) received critical acclaim, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
In 2023, Song made her feature film debut with Past Lives, a romantic drama inspired by her own immigrant background. The film premiered at Sundance and received widespread critical acclaim. It earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, making Song the first Asian woman nominated in the original screenplay category and the first Asian female director nominated for both Best Picture and Original Screenplay.
Before her film debut, Song was a staff writer for Amazon’s The Wheel of Time series in 2021. She also directed the music video for Laufey’s song “Goddess” in 2024. Her upcoming film Materialists, a romantic comedy starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, is set for release in June 2025.
