John Malkovich Wins Venice Best Actor Award
John Malkovich has claimed one of the Venice Film Festival’s top acting honors, adding a new achievement to a career that has spanned several decades.
The 72-year-old actor received the Volpi Cup for best actor on Saturday, September 12, for Wild Horse Nine. The film pairs the two-time Academy Award nominee with Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and is directed by Martin McDonagh, whose previous work includes In Bruges and The Banshees of Inisherin.
In the movie, Malkovich portrays an unusual CIA operative. The project is also beginning to draw awards-season interest as attention shifts toward the upcoming Oscar race.
Malkovich did not attend the ceremony in person because he was reportedly outside Italy working on another production. He instead delivered his response remotely.
“I am humbled to be chosen for this award, which has been given to so many wonderful actors over the past 83 iterations of the Venice Film Festival,” Malkovich said, according to Variety.
He went on to credit McDonagh and Rockwell for their contributions to the project.
The Venice victory gives Malkovich another high-profile moment nearly three decades after Being John Malkovich. The 1999 movie, directed by Spike Jonze from Charlie Kaufman’s screenplay, became one of the actor’s signature films.
The festival’s biggest film prize went to Woman Unknown. May el-Toukhy’s Danish drama, about a housemaid involved with a German soldier during World War II, won the Golden Lion.
El-Toukhy also used the occasion to address obstacles facing female filmmakers and acknowledged jury chair Maggie Gyllenhaal for bringing attention to unequal opportunities in the industry.
