Bullock’s Risky Career Pivot
Sandra Bullock has revealed that she deliberately stepped away from romantic comedies in the mid-2000s after growing frustrated with criticism of the genre.
Speaking with longtime friend Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock said she began reconsidering her career after years as one of Hollywood's biggest rom-com stars. "I was getting so much s**t for them," she admitted.
Bullock had built much of her early success on films including "While You Were Sleeping," "Forces of Nature," "Hope Floats" and "Two Weeks Notice" with Hugh Grant. She also expanded her comedy credentials with the 2000 hit "Miss Congeniality."
After "Two Weeks Notice" became a success in 2002, Bullock took a break from the genre and returned with a dramatic role in "Crash," directed by Paul Haggis. The film's cast later won the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding ensemble, while "Crash" went on to win the Oscar for best picture.
Aniston noted that leaving comedy can be risky for actors strongly associated with the genre, especially because Hollywood often undervalues comedic performances. Bullock said she now feels differently and has come to miss making comedies.
Her career shift was similar to Matthew McConaughey's later decision to leave romantic comedies behind. McConaughey moved his family to Texas and even rejected a $14 million offer as he pursued more dramatic roles.
Bullock returned to rom-coms in 2009 with Anne Fletcher's "The Proposal," co-starring Ryan Reynolds. That year also brought "All About Steve," which earned her the Razzie for worst actress, and "The Blind Side," which won her the Oscar for best actress.
Her most recent rom-com was 2022's "The Lost City" with Channing Tatum, a post-pandemic box office success that earned $192 million worldwide.
