Chris Hansen Pushes Back

Robert Pattinson’s upcoming A24 film Primetime is already drawing controversy ahead of its September 25 release. Pattinson plays a fictionalized version of Chris Hansen, the former Dateline NBC correspondent best known for hosting To Catch a Predator from 2004 to 2007.

The NBC series followed sting operations targeting men who believed they were meeting underage victims, with Hansen confronting suspects before law enforcement intervened. Its mix of investigative journalism and television spectacle made it famous, but also controversial.

Hansen has publicly criticized Primetime, which is not an authorized biopic. Director Lance Oppenheim, however, has said he still hopes Hansen watches the film. Oppenheim’s interest in the project was partly sparked in 2024, when his wife bought him a personalized Cameo message from Hansen.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Oppenheim said: “I’m excited for him to ‘have a seat’ and watch the movie in a movie theater, if that’s where he chooses to watch it.”

Hansen was previously invited to a private screening but declined to proceed after being asked to sign an agreement. He has claimed the document would have affected his legal rights and the use of his name, image and brand. Other reports have described it as a standard pre-release NDA.

Oppenheim has said he was not present for that dispute. Instead, he has framed Primetime as an exploration of what happens when journalists spend their lives immersed in disturbing material while also being expected to turn that work into compelling television.

The role fits Pattinson’s preference for unconventional projects, even alongside major studio films such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman. He recently appeared as Antinous in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and will also be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, scheduled for December 18.

Whether Hansen ultimately watches Primetime remains unclear, but his reaction could become a major part of the conversation once the film reaches theaters.
