Ruffalo Rejects Accusation

Mark Ruffalo is challenging Paramount after the studio linked comments surrounding its Warner Bros. Discovery takeover battle to antisemitism.

The actor addressed the dispute on Saturday, August 22, defending his criticism of the proposed $111 billion transaction and rejecting the suggestion that his position reflected prejudice.

“The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest,” Ruffalo wrote on X.

His latest response followed a public clash involving Safra Catz, Oracle’s executive vice chair and a Paramount board member. Ruffalo had taken issue with Catz’s discussion of technology Oracle provided to Israel after the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Paramount issued its own statement on Friday, August 21, arguing that the debate over its Warner Bros. Discovery bid should center on business and legal questions rather than rhetoric it considers antisemitic.

Ruffalo has campaigned against the takeover since February. His concerns include increasing concentration of media ownership, possible job losses and the future independence of major properties such as CNN, HBO and Warner Bros.

The deal would further expand the influence of Paramount Skydance chairman David Ellison, whose father, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, is known as an ally of Donald Trump.

Opposition extends beyond Ruffalo. Jane Fonda, Joaquin Phoenix and filmmaker David Fincher were among more than 1,000 Hollywood professionals who backed an April letter urging authorities to stop the merger. Fonda’s Committee for the First Amendment has also participated in the campaign.

Regulators are examining the transaction as well. California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 11 other state attorneys general are challenging the acquisition, with a federal antitrust trial scheduled for March 2 through March 19, 2027.

The confrontation adds another political chapter to Ruffalo’s public profile. A longtime Trump critic, he has previously spoken against corporate influence in government and has said he would not entirely dismiss the possibility of seeking public office.
