SVU’s Historic Power Shift
Mariska Hargitay is celebrating a major behind-the-scenes shift at Law Order: Special Victims Unit as Michele Fazekas becomes the show’s first female showrunner in season 27.
Fazekas’ appointment is both historic and familiar. She previously worked in the SVU writers’ room from seasons 3 through 7, a period Hargitay remembers as one of the show’s strongest creative runs.
“I had a secret fantasy of having a female showrunner for a few years,” Hargitay, 62, told Variety in an interview published Saturday, June 12.
For Hargitay, who has played Olivia Benson since the NBC drama premiered in 1999, Fazekas’ return has brought fresh energy to the set while reconnecting the series with earlier character dynamics, emotional detail and even touches of humor.
Fazekas, who most recently worked on Prime Video’s Gen V, joins a long creative lineage shaped by Dick Wolf, the franchise’s creator, and former SVU showrunners Neal Baer and Warren Leight. Her arrival also comes as the show continues to balance legacy and renewal, with Ice-T remaining a key part of the ensemble and newer cast members, including Aimé Donna Kelly, joining Hargitay in the current era.
Hargitay praised the collaborative atmosphere under Fazekas and director Brenna Malloy, especially while reflecting on the season 27 finale, which Fazekas wrote. She called the episode one of her favorites and credited the team with bringing care and precision to the story.
After more than two decades on television, SVU remains closely tied to Hargitay’s Benson, a role first shaped alongside Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler. Fazekas’ promotion now gives the series a new milestone: a female creative lead guiding one of TV’s longest-running dramas into its next chapter.
