Trump Draws Garden Boos

President Donald Trump became part of the spectacle at Madison Square Garden on Monday, June 8, as the New York Knicks played their first NBA Finals home game since 1999. The president watched Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs from a private suite.

The Associated Press reported that Trump, 79, left New Jersey aboard Marine One, landing near Wall Street before continuing across Manhattan by motorcade. He reached the arena shortly before tipoff with his granddaughter Kai Trump and other guests. His visit made history, as no sitting U.S. president had previously attended an NBA Finals matchup.

Inside MSG, the reaction was split. Some fans booed when the broadcast showed Trump during the National Anthem, which was performed by Avery Wilson. Moments later, he was seen applauding as the Knicks prepared for one of the franchise’s biggest nights in decades. The occasion also revived memories of New York’s 1999 Finals team, led by Patrick Ewing under coach Jeff Van Gundy.

Trump’s presence caused friction beyond the seats. Extra security around Madison Square Garden led to the cancellation of the Knicks’ outdoor watch party, frustrating supporters who had already been dealing with steep Finals ticket prices. Mayor Zohran Mamdani later moved the public viewing to Bryant Park, where up to 5,000 people were expected to gather.

Ann Coulter, a conservative commentator, criticized Trump’s decision on X, calling it “selfish” and “narcissistic.” Whoopi Goldberg took the opposite view on The View, arguing that Trump and Mamdani were both New Yorkers and Knicks fans, regardless of politics.

The Spurs arrived with their own championship history, shaped by Gregg Popovich’s long tenure in San Antonio. Still, much of the attention around Game 3 landed away from the court, on security, access, politics, and Trump’s appearance.

Asked earlier about Game 3 tickets topping $8,000, Trump told reporters, “You can watch it on television.”
