Kathy Hilton Exits WeHo Pride Role as Kyle Richards Defends Her

Kyle Backs Kathy

Kyle Richards has publicly backed Kathy Hilton after her sister withdrew from her planned role as grand marshal of the West Hollywood Pride Parade.

Richards, 57, addressed the situation on Instagram Stories on Friday, June 5, after Hilton, 67, faced criticism from some in the LGBTQIA+ community. The backlash focused largely on Hilton’s past social connection to President Donald Trump. Hilton has not publicly confirmed whether she voted for Trump, 79, but she and her husband, Rick Hilton, have previously spent time socially with the Trump family.

“My sister Kathy has always been a supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and will continue to be,” Richards wrote.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills personality also suggested that knowing someone, or having crossed paths with them socially, should not automatically be treated as proof of shared political views. Richards said she understood Hilton’s decision to remove herself from the parade lineup so the event could remain centered on the LGBTQIA+ community.

Hilton confirmed on Wednesday, June 3, that she was giving up the honorary position. In her statement, she said her intention had been to take part in WeHo Pride as a gesture of celebration and support, while also recognizing the discussion that followed her selection.

The story quickly gained attention beyond West Hollywood because of Hilton and Richards’ long-running place in Bravo’s reality-TV universe. Andy Cohen, who helped turn the Real Housewives franchise into a major pop-culture brand, remains closely associated with the world that made the family’s dynamic familiar to viewers.

Hilton also emphasized her past involvement with LGBTQ+ and AIDS-related causes. She named GLAAD, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, God’s Love We Deliver and Project Angel Food among the organizations she has supported. She also mentioned Dr. Mathilde Krim, whose AIDS activism became an important part of public-health history.

Hilton added that Pride events have long held personal meaning for her, noting that she served as grand marshal of the LA Pride parade in 2005 with her daughter Paris Hilton. Her withdrawal means WeHo Pride will continue without one of its most recognizable planned names.
