Taylor Swift Revisits Her Cowgirl Era for New Toy Story 5 Song
Taylor Swift has turned a childhood memory into part of her latest Disney-Pixar release.
The 36-year-old singer celebrated the arrival of her original track, I Knew It, I Knew You, on Friday, June 5, by posting rarely seen footage from her early years on X and Instagram. In the video, a young Swift appears dressed as a little cowgirl, complete with a cowboy hat, boots and a denim skirt accented with red trim, while dancing for the camera.
The clip was a fitting nod to the song’s creative direction. Swift wrote the new track with Jack Antonoff, one of her most frequent collaborators, and shaped it around Jessie, the spirited cowgirl character who entered the franchise in Toy Story 2. Voiced by Joan Cusack, Jessie has remained one of Pixar’s most recognizable and emotionally layered supporting characters.
“Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time,” Swift wrote alongside the throwback video.
Swift also used the post to recognize director Andrew Stanton, who brought her into the project, and Randy Newman, the composer whose music has long been woven into the identity of Toy Story. Newman’s songs and scores helped establish the franchise’s emotional language from the beginning, giving musical weight to the world of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.
The release came just days after Swift confirmed on Monday, June 1, that she had created an original song for Toy Story 5. Her announcement followed a run of teasers from Disney and Pixar, which had been building speculation around the soundtrack reveal.
In that earlier post, Swift explained that writing for the franchise had been a longtime dream, dating back to her first experience watching the original Toy Story as a 5-year-old. She said she connected with the new film after seeing it in an early version and wrote the song shortly after returning home from the screening.
For Swift, I Knew It, I Knew You brings together several parts of her artistic history: country influences, childhood nostalgia and her ongoing creative partnership with Antonoff. For Pixar, the track adds a major contemporary pop name to a franchise whose musical identity has been closely associated with Newman for decades.
Toy Story 5 is scheduled to open in theaters on June 19.
