Matt’s Love Wasn’t Random
Viewers of Shifting Gears might assume Tim Allen’s widowed lead was always meant to explore the dating scene, but the ABC sitcom deliberately avoided that approach before reuniting him with Jenna Elfman’s Eve.
In the Wednesday, February 4 finale, Matt (Allen) briefly attempts to move on after his breakup with Eve by joining a traditional-values dating app called TradSwipe. The experiment quickly backfires during a disastrous date with Lynn (Angela Kinsey), reinforcing that casual dating doesn’t align with Matt’s personality. A chance meeting with Eve later that night ultimately leads the former couple to reconcile after their season-long split.
Showrunner Michelle Nader has said the creative team never envisioned Matt cycling through multiple love interests. “It had to be her. It literally had to be Eve,” she explained, emphasizing that the series was designed around emotional continuity rather than episodic romance.
That philosophy distinguishes Shifting Gears from Allen’s earlier sitcom work. On Home Improvement, created by Matt Williams, Allen’s character was married from the start, as he was again on Last Man Standing, opposite Nancy Travis. By contrast, Matt begins Shifting Gears navigating life alone after the death of his wife, shaping a slower, more reflective romantic arc.
Elfman’s arrival marked a turning point. After dating throughout season two, Matt and Eve split due to long-distance challenges before reuniting in the finale, which ends with Matt agreeing to travel with her for work. The grounded tone aligns with Elfman’s sitcom roots on Dharma Greg, created by Chuck Lorre, where emotional chemistry drove the comedy.
Premiering in January 2025, Shifting Gears continues to focus on character-driven storytelling.
The series is streaming on Hulu.
