Grey’s Filming Halted
Production on Grey’s Anatomy season 22 was temporarily paused on Friday, January 30, despite originally scheduled filming plans.
According to Deadline, the ABC medical drama halted production after University of Minnesota student groups called for a national shutdown amid ongoing anti-ICE protests. The decision was reportedly made once producers learned that some crew members would not be reporting to work. Filming is expected to resume on Saturday, January 31, and no other Hollywood productions have yet been confirmed as affected.
The pause comes during a previously planned three-week on-air break. Grey’s Anatomy is set to return to its regular Thursday 10 p.m. ET slot on February 26, following a preemption likely tied to Winter Olympics coverage on ABC. In the meantime, repeat episodes of 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville will air in its place. The most recent episode ended with Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) bringing her newborns home and featured the return of Kate Walsh.
New episodes will introduce several guest arcs, including Jen Landon, who will recur as plastic surgery attending Dr. Tonight Wright. Sara Paxton and Connor Price will also appear in episodes 11 and 12. The season has already seen notable cast changes, including Amelia Shepherd’s extended sabbatical following Monica’s on-screen death and reduced episode guarantees for veteran cast members.
Showrunner Meg Marinis previously acknowledged the creative impact of these shifts, noting, “But even in the last two seasons with what you saw this year, we had to reduce the cast a little bit because of industry-wide budget cuts.”
Now deep into its third decade, the series continues to evolve under the legacy of creator Shonda Rhimes and longtime lead Ellen Pompeo, balancing production realities with ongoing storytelling.
