Katie Thurston’s Advocacy Moment
Former The Bachelorette lead Katie Thurston has shared a deeply personal family update, revealing that her mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The 35-year-old reality TV alum announced the news via Instagram on Monday, January 19, explaining that she traveled to Seattle to accompany her mother to her first medical appointment after the diagnosis. In her post, Thurston emphasized the critical role of self-advocacy in women’s health, writing, “I hate that we have to be our biggest advocate but also, it’s what will save our life.”
Through an accompanying carousel, Thurston detailed how her mother’s cancer was detected despite initially reassuring test results. According to the information she shared, her mother received a “negative” and “probably benign” assessment from a December mammogram, with dense breast tissue noted but no recommendation for additional screening. It was only after Thurston urged her mother to request further imaging that a breast ultrasound revealed suspicious masses, leading to a breast MRI, biopsies, and a confirmed cancer diagnosis—identified within weeks of the original mammogram.
In the comments section, Thurston urged followers with a family history of breast cancer or dense breast tissue to proactively seek additional imaging, such as ultrasounds or MRIs, underscoring how early detection can be life-saving.
The family news arrives nearly a year after Thurston publicly disclosed her own breast cancer diagnosis at age 34. She first noticed a persistent lump herself and later shared her journey through diagnosis and treatment with followers. In March 2025, she relocated from Los Angeles to New York City to begin fertility treatments ahead of chemotherapy and surgery.
On March 28, shortly after Us Weekly confirmed her marriage to comedian Jeff Arcuri on March 22, Thurston revealed that her cancer had metastasized to her liver, advancing her condition to stage IV.
Earlier this month, she offered a hopeful update, noting that recent liver MRI scans showed no evidence of disease, with further breast scans scheduled in the coming weeks.
Thurston’s openness has resonated widely within the Bachelor Nation community she first joined under franchise creator Mike Fleiss, with fellow former lead Kaitlyn Bristowe and other alumni frequently spotlighting health awareness and mutual support among cast members.
