Paradise Promises Whiplash
Hulu’s breakout political thriller Paradise is gearing up for a high-stakes return, and star Sarah Shahi says season 2 will push viewers even further off balance. According to the actress, the new episodes double down on the narrative whiplash that made the series an early streaming sensation.
Shahi, who plays psychotherapist and grief specialist Gabriela, credits creator Dan Fogelman for refusing to let the audience settle into comfort. “It is a roller-coaster ride,” Shahi teased, explaining that the show thrives on constantly overturning assumptions.
Premiering in January 2025, Paradise initially appeared to be a sleek murder mystery set within an elite, gated community. That premise was swiftly detonated by a finale reveal showing the town to be an underground bunker protecting the world’s most powerful figures after an apocalyptic event wiped out the rest of humanity. The twist sparked viral fan theories and positioned the show as one of Hulu’s most talked-about launches.
The ensemble has been central to that momentum. Sterling K. Brown, who also serves as an executive producer, anchors the series with a performance that blends authority and vulnerability, while James Marsden adds an unpredictable edge that fueled early speculation about the show’s true direction. Julianne Nicholson further deepens the drama, earning praise for bringing emotional gravity to the bunker’s unraveling power dynamics.
For Shahi, returning for season 2 also marks a personal milestone. After stepping away from network television, she rebuilt her career on her own terms, landing her breakout streaming role as Billie Connelly on Sex/Life. That period of reinvention is explored in her memoir Life Is Lifey: The A to Z’s on Navigating Life’s Messy Middle, which arrives January 27.
Season 2 of Paradise premieres February 23 on Hulu, with new episodes rolling out weekly.
