How Marriage Changed Him
Keira Knightley has shared a rare and surprisingly relatable insight into her marriage with musician James Righton, revealing how their relationship quietly sparked a dramatic culinary turnaround at home.
During a recent appearance on the Dish Podcast, hosted by celebrated chef Nigella Lawson, the actress reflected on the early stages of her romance with Righton, when his eating habits were extremely basic and his interest in restaurants was virtually nonexistent.
As their relationship progressed, Knightley—with encouragement from her childhood friend Charlie—began introducing Righton to dining out and new flavours. What started as gentle coaxing evolved into a full-blown passion for cooking, eventually flipping the dynamic in their household.
Knightley summed up the unexpected outcome with a laugh: “And then we created a monster.”
Today, Righton is the primary cook in the family and even takes charge of major occasions, a transformation that mirrors similar journeys taken by other musicians-turned-food-enthusiasts, including Blur bassist Alex James, who famously built a second career around his love of food and farming.
The couple, who began dating in 2011 and married two years later, share two daughters, Edie and Delilah. Knightley has previously described their marriage as loud, funny, and occasionally chaotic—a balance that works thanks to Righton’s outgoing personality and her own more reserved nature at industry events. Friends such as filmmaker Joe Cornish, who has known Knightley for years, have often noted her grounded approach to fame and family life.
Away from home, the actress has also been open about how motherhood has reshaped her career choices. While promoting projects like Black Doves, Knightley has made clear that she is now more selective, ruling out long, globe-trotting franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean in favour of work that allows her to stay close to her children.
