Mark Ruffalo has revealed the unexpected, even dreamlike, source behind one of his most memorable on-screen moments with Ryan Reynolds. Reflecting on the now-famous father-son clash in Netflix’s 2022 sci-fi adventure The Adam Project, Ruffalo explained that his inspiration for the punch actually came to him in his sleep. In the film, the actor portrayed Louis Reed, a brilliant physicist and the father of Reynolds’ character, Adam. Their emotional reunion takes an abrupt turn when Louis throws a surprising right hook — a scene that has since become a fan favorite.

During a recent GQ interview released on Friday, October 17, Ruffalo shared that the sequence unfolded differently than originally planned. He had a vivid dream about how the punch should look and decided to trust his instincts when cameras rolled. “It was written that way and we did a rehearsal and I had a dream that that’s what the punch should look like, and I just did what I did in my dream,” Ruffalo said.

The actor recalled that everyone on set, including director Shawn Levy, burst into laughter after the take — and they didn’t even need another try. Ruffalo later joked that it was one of those rare moments when pure spontaneity created movie magic.

The Marvel star also reflected on reuniting with Jennifer Garner, his 13 Going on 30 co-star, for the film. Their reunion as on-screen parents to Reynolds’ character added a nostalgic touch that delighted fans of their earlier romantic comedy.

Outside The Adam Project, Ruffalo recently shared another wild story involving his Now You See Me co-star Woody Harrelson. Appearing on Harrelson and Ted Danson’s podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Ruffalo described how he once stepped in to defuse a bar fight while filming in New Orleans.
