Matchmaking Groundhog Day Sparks

Could romance be brewing between Groundhog Day stars Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell? According to their former co-star’s daughter, Margaret Qualley, we might be looking at a reunion decades in the making!

On the August 14th edition of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Margaret Qualley, 30, shared a surprising story about her backstage antics, revealing that she attempted to play matchmaker between her mom, Andie MacDowell, and Groundhog Day co-star Bill Murray. Qualley was on the show to promote her latest movie, Honey Don’t!, while Murray, 74, joined the Pedrito Martínez Group for a musical performance.

"Breaking news!" she exclaimed, as she told Fallon and the audience about the unexpected backstage encounter. According to Qualley, Murray dropped by her dressing room before the taping.

“Bill Murray, literally tonight, he pops into my backstage dressing room,” she reminisced. “He’s wearing a Piggly Wiggly shirt. I grew up in North Carolina, and Piggly Wiggly’s a Southern thing.”

The surprise reunion didn’t stop there. Qualley learned that both Murray and MacDowell now live in Charleston. This sparked memories of their time together on set. “I’m gonna give you the tea,” she teased. "He said, ‘You know, your mom and I — we didn’t get along so good while we were making that movie.’"

But instead of dwelling on the past, Qualley saw an opportunity. "He’s living in Charleston. She’s living in Charleston. They’re both single, they’re both crazy. Maybe they should get together!”

The actress even joked that she planned to reconnect them. “I told him to circle back and get my number if he wants to connect with my mom,” she laughed. “And if he’s got any sense at all, he’d be the luckiest guy in the world!”

As of now, it’s unclear whether we’ll get that Groundhog Day sequel in real life. But who knows? Maybe there’s a love story waiting to be written after all!
