Johnson, who shared the locker room with Kelce from 2013 to 2017, had a front-row seat to the tight end’s early NFL years. Back then, Kelce was just breaking into the league, still figuring out his game and occasionally his love life — like with his brief reality TV moment on Chasing Kelce.

Fast forward a few years, and Kelce’s career took off. He became a key weapon for the Chiefs, a multiple-time Pro Bowler, and eventually one half of the world’s most buzzed-about couples after getting together with pop superstar Taylor Swift in 2023.

“He outkicked his coverage,” Johnson told Fox News Digital. “Taylor’s big time. Kelce’s big time as well, football-wise, but she is globally.”

Johnson says Kelce always had confidence, but nobody could have fully predicted just how dominant — and famous — he’d become. By the time Johnson left for his final NFL season with the Raiders in 2018, Kelce had already shown flashes of the swagger and skill that would define his career.

Of course, in those early years, his teammates couldn’t resist teasing him about Chasing Kelce. Johnson recalls the locker room banter but says Kelce never let it distract him from the job at hand, especially under the watch of coach Andy Reid. “When you’re playing for Andy, it’s all business,” Johnson once joked.

Now, Kelce is heading into his 13th season with the Chiefs, opening against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 5. Last year’s stats were a little underwhelming by his standards — something Kelce partly blames on splitting his focus between football and new ventures like acting. But with the new season on the horizon, his mindset is clear: he’s chasing nothing less than another Super Bowl.

From a fresh-faced rookie to a three-time champ and global celebrity, Kelce’s journey is the kind of story even Hollywood might find hard to script. And if you ask Derrick Johnson, he’s already living his biggest win.
