Pegg Spills Trek Secrets

Simon Pegg has opened up about Quentin Tarantino’s scrapped Star Trek project — and according to him, it was exactly as wild as fans might imagine.

The British star, best known for portraying engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the Star Trek reboots between 2009 and 2016, revealed he never laid eyes on Quentin Tarantino’s actual script. Instead, Pegg got an in-depth rundown from filmmaker JJ Abrams, who directed two of his Trek appearances. His takeaway was blunt and memorable: “That was what we call in the business bats crazy. It was everything you would expect a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek script to be.”

Tarantino, famous for Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, pitched his R-rated Trek idea to Paramount in 2017, with Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber backing it. The concept promised a grittier, stranger spin on the sci-fi universe — but despite the initial excitement, the project was never officially greenlit. By 2019, Tarantino was openly stepping away, and the idea quietly drifted into Hollywood’s pile of unrealized projects.

Pegg has previously pointed to the financial realities holding the series back. Even the most successful Trek films max out around $500 million globally, and with production budgets often near $200 million, the profits aren’t Marvel-sized. Still, the recent merger between Paramount and Skydance has given him a little optimism. Skydance founder David Ellison, now in a key position at Paramount, has long been a supporter of the “Kelvin timeline” reboot series — and Pegg thinks that could tilt the odds toward another movie.

The last Trek installment, 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, grossed $343 million on a $185 million budget, a result that disappointed the studio. While Tarantino’s version may never see the light of day, Pegg’s description leaves little doubt — it would have been one of the boldest, weirdest voyages the Enterprise ever took.
