Bill Hader Reveals Why He Really Missed the SNL 50th Anniversary Special

SNL Snub Shocker

When Saturday Night Live gathered its biggest stars for the show’s 50th anniversary, many fans were quick to notice who wasn’t there: Bill Hader.

At the time, his team claimed it was due to scheduling issues. But now, Hader himself is setting the record straight—and the real reason is a lot more personal.

In a new interview with Seth Meyers, Hader admitted he skipped the reunion because of anxiety, something he’s struggled with for years — even during his time as a cast member on SNL.

His friend and former co-star Andy Samberg had reached out to invite him to be part of a digital short called Anxiety, which aired during the special. Hader turned it down, not because he didn’t like the idea, but because it hit a little too close to home.

“Andy Samberg called me and was like, ‘Hey, so we’re doing this short about how, you know, everybody had anxiety...’ And when he told me that, I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to do that.’”

The role ended up going to current cast member Bowen Yang — and according to Hader, he crushed it.

Hader has opened up about his anxiety in the past, revealing that he often had panic attacks just moments before going live on SNL. Backstage, he'd hide out in distant bathrooms to calm himself down before walking out in full costume.

Talking to Meyers, he reflected on how calm others always seemed in comparison — especially performers like Meyers and Amy Poehler. While they had “ice in their veins,” Hader says he was often trembling with nerves.

His absence from the special might’ve surprised fans, but for Hader, it was simply about protecting his mental health. And maybe that’s the most honest way to celebrate a career — by knowing your limits and saying no, even when the whole world is watching.
