Stephen Colbert Lands New Role After The Late Show Cancellation

Colbert’s New Late-Night Twist

Stephen Colbert, 61, is making a surprising return to CBS—not as a late-night host, but as a guest star on Elsbeth. In the upcoming third season of this quirky crime comedy, he plays Scotty Bristol, the host of a fictional late-night show Way Late with Scotty Bristol. Colbert’s appearance adds a fresh, comedic twist to the series about an eccentric New York attorney solving murders.

Variety reveals that Stephen Colbert’s upcoming guest role on Elsbeth has been quietly in the works for a while, thanks largely to the efforts of his co-star Wendell Pierce. During Pierce’s February visit to The Late Show, Colbert jokingly suggested he could play a corpse on Elsbeth. Pierce quickly responded with a playful promise: “I can make that happen. I know a guy who knows a guy.” This fun banter coincided perfectly with CBS’s approval of Elsbeth’s third season, setting the stage for Colbert’s exciting new cameo.

Though The Late Show is slated to end in May 2026, allegedly due to financial reasons, rumors have swirled that the cancellation might be linked to political pressure from former president Donald Trump. CBS’s parent company, Paramount, is negotiating an $8 billion sale, and some speculate that Trump’s influence over the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) could have played a role in the decision.

Interestingly, Colbert’s role on Elsbeth was created with him in mind. Even though The Late Show’s cancellation left the door open for a recast, CBS decided to keep Colbert onboard. The show, which stars Carrie Preston as the titular character, has also featured A-list talent like Nathan Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, and Matthew Broderick.

As for Trump, he took to social media to celebrate Colbert’s exit, tweeting, “I absolutely love that Colbert was fired.” Colbert, never one to back down, fired back with his signature wit: “The gloves are off.”
