Melissa Gilbert reflects on her six-year romance with Rob Lowe, admitting it was a rollercoaster. Speaking candidly on Jennie Garth's "I Choose Me" podcast on July 29, the 61-year-old actress got real about the highs and lows.
"I was such a baby when Rob and I were together," Gilbert confessed. The pair started dating in 1981 at the tender age of 17, while Gilbert was still starring as Laura Ingalls Wilder on Little House on the Prairie. Their relationship ultimately ended for good when they were 23, in 1987.
“It was very tumultuous,” Gilbert shared, looking back. Despite appearing seasoned in Hollywood, having worked for years, she wasn’t fully prepared for the challenges that came with dating Lowe, whose career was just beginning to soar.
“I watched his meteoric rise unfold, but I wasn't ready for the chaos,” she said. "The red carpets, the award shows — I could handle that. But the fandom? The girls? That was another story."
Gilbert admitted that her view of “every girl being my sister” was quickly shattered as she witnessed Lowe’s growing legion of female fans. “It was like I didn’t exist. They’d push right past me, stick phone numbers in his pockets,” she recalled. "To say it was disconcerting is an understatement. It was horrible. But honestly, I learned what didn’t work for me — and what I wouldn’t put up with later."
Despite the emotional toll, Gilbert says there were bright moments in their time together. “We had some really fun times. But more than that, I took away lessons that shaped who I am today,” she reflected. "Looking back, I see my life now as so much more peaceful. Back then, I was always tense, waiting for the next drama to hit."
After her split from Lowe, Gilbert moved on with Bo Brinkman (married 1988–1994) and Bruce Boxleitner (married 1995–2011). She found lasting love with Timothy Busfield, whom she married in 2013.
