CNN’s Jake Tapper didn’t hold back in tearing into President Donald Trump over the Justice Department’s controversial memo that officially closed the Epstein case, declaring there was no “client list” tied to the late financier. Tapper wasted no time, slamming the Trump administration and calling out the public’s gullibility in the aftermath.
"People are being played for fools," Tapper said, delivering his sharp critique after Trump dodged a reporter’s question about the Epstein files and their glaring inconsistencies.
Trump quickly responded, claiming it was “unbelievable” that “people are still talking about this creep.”
But Tapper wasn’t letting up. On CNN's The Lead, he dedicated the opening segment to unpacking the backlash stirred by the DOJ's memo, which didn’t only bury the Epstein case but also reignited the debate around Trump’s ties to the scandal. Tapper zeroed in on a tweet from Elon Musk that echoed a growing frustration among Trump’s base: "How can people be expected to have faith in Trump if he won't release the Epstein files?"
“This raises a serious question, and it’s not just coming from random internet users — it’s coming from MAGA supporters themselves," Tapper noted.
The memo’s conclusion that Epstein didn’t have a “client list” or blackmail material threw fuel on the fire, but Tapper reminded viewers that these same officials were once the loudest voices amplifying the Epstein conspiracy during Trump’s re-election bid.
"And now they're the ones saying there’s nothing to see here?" Tapper asked. "Sounds like a game."
Jake also dove into Elon Musk's recent social media jabs at Republican leadership, including a meme mocking the situation. But it wasn’t just Elon’s tweets that raised eyebrows. Earlier in the year, Attorney General Pam Bondi had confidently declared that Epstein’s "client list" was ready for public scrutiny.
"Mr. President, people are talking about this guy because your own team has been talking about it for years," Tapper concluded, summing up the tension between the administration’s public stance and the unanswered questions swirling around Epstein’s legacy.
