Rob Mac, Officially
Rob McElhenney is officially going by a shorter, simpler name: Rob Mac.
The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and co-creator, 48, has filed legal documents in Los Angeles to change his last name. The reason? Global business partners were struggling to pronounce McElhenney, and the actor decided it was time to simplify things — especially as his work continues to expand internationally.
For weeks, McElhenney had already been using “Rob Mac” in negotiations, particularly in South America, where his production company, More Better Productions, has been investing in football teams. The company is best known for co-producing the hit docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, which follows the journey of McElhenney and actor Ryan Reynolds after they purchased the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC.
McElhenney told Variety that the decision was driven by practical concerns as his career and storytelling ventures increasingly span different countries and languages.
McElhenney shared with Variety that the name change was a practical move as his career and creative projects reach more international markets. He noted that with their expanding global presence, his original surname became difficult for many to pronounce, prompting him to adopt the simpler “Rob Mac” professionally.
At first, the actor was hesitant about making such a personal change. He worried that shortening the name might feel like turning his back on his heritage. But after learning that some of his ancestors had already adjusted the spelling of the family name over time to make it easier to use, he realized the change was part of a long-standing tradition.
Interestingly, some of his family members were on board, especially while celebrating his birthday. But not everyone was thrilled. His wife, Sunny co-star Kaitlin Olson, revealed that their two sons weren’t excited about the shift, since they still carry the McElhenney name legally. Olson herself also uses McElhenney legally, though she keeps her maiden name professionally.
The name change brings McElhenney even closer to the fictional version of himself: Mac, the character he’s played on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia since the show debuted in 2005.
McElhenney and Olson met on the set of Sunny during its early seasons, started dating in secret, and eventually married in 2008. The couple now shares two sons — Axel, 14, and Leo, 12 — and continues to work together both on-screen and off.
