Method Gone Too Far
While Blue Valentine earned critical acclaim for its raw portrayal of a crumbling marriage, the emotional intensity seen on screen had an equally taxing off-screen origin — especially for Michelle Williams.
In a recent episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, the Brokeback Mountain star reflected on the unorthodox methods director Derek Cianfrance used to draw out realistic tension between her and co-star Ryan Gosling during the 2010 drama. One method: forcing the actors to live together for two weeks to simulate a deteriorating marriage.
The film explores the relationship between Cindy (Williams) and Dean (Gosling), cutting between the joyful early years and the bitter dissolution of their marriage. Initially, the actors filmed the romantic flashbacks — what Williams described as “young and in love” scenes. But to transition into the emotionally draining sequences that captured the disintegration of the couple’s bond, Cianfrance hit pause on production.
“He was like, ‘We gotta mess this up, and we need to burn it down,’” Williams shared.
During the hiatus, the pair shared a living space, performing improvised scenarios designed to incite irritation and emotional conflict. One particularly symbolic act involved burning a prop wedding photo — a ritual meant to signify the breakdown of the characters' relationship.
Williams didn’t hold back in describing the experience: “I don’t know if anybody would work like that again.”
She also admitted to feeling a sense of guilt over the production halt, especially given the film's modest budget. “You’re paying people… such a small movie, so low budget,” she noted.
Despite the emotional toll, the method yielded results. Williams received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, and Gosling earned a Golden Globe nod for his performance.
In a separate anecdote of on-set discomfort involving Gosling, Jessica Biel recalled auditioning for The Notebook while covered in fake blood during filming for Texas Chainsaw Massacre. “In my mind, I just remember having blood on me... and was like, ‘Okay, I'd love to fall in love with you, let's do this’,” she shared on The View. Though she didn’t land the role — Rachel McAdams eventually did — Biel called it “a very Hollywood moment.”
