Reese Witherspoon Chosen as Jury Foreperson for ‘Legally Blonde’ Role

Reese Witherspoon might have played one of Hollywood’s most beloved lawyers in Legally Blonde, but it seems her portrayal of Elle Woods left some people a little confused about her real-life credentials. Appearing on The Graham Norton Show alongside Ariana Grande, Will Ferrell, and Don Gilet, Witherspoon shared a hilarious and eye-opening story about her time on jury duty.

The actress explained that she was summoned for jury duty about seven years after Legally Blonde became a cultural sensation. Despite being certain she wouldn’t be chosen, Witherspoon ended up being selected for a two-week trial in Beverly Hills. “I thought, ‘Surely they’re not gonna pick me,’” she said, laughing. But not only was she chosen, she was unanimously voted as the jury foreperson.

“They were like, ‘You went to law school,’” she recounted, clearly amused. “And I had to tell them, ‘Y’all, this is really upsetting. I didn’t finish college, let alone go to Harvard Law!’”

The trial centered around a dog bite incident, and Witherspoon quickly found herself fully immersed in the proceedings. While she may have lacked a legal background, her passion for fairness mirrored her Legally Blonde character. However, the process also revealed some shocking biases among her fellow jurors. “Some bad stuff goes down in there,” she noted. “People were saying things like, ‘I think she’s guilty ’cause I don’t like the way she looked.’ And that was very troubling. I had to remind them, ‘We don’t have enough evidence!’”

Despite the unexpected drama, Witherspoon embraced her role, learning firsthand how important it is to take jury duty seriously. While she may not be a real lawyer, the Big Little Lies star clearly carried a sense of justice and responsibility into the courtroom.

Though the actress has no plans to trade Hollywood for Harvard Law, her experience proves that even Hollywood stars aren’t immune to civic duty — and sometimes life imitates art in the most unexpected ways.
